Vintage urban streetwear trends are making a major comeback which we’ve seen during this past spring and current summer season. Certain brands such as FILA are back in the game, whereas other brands such as Adidas and Nike have never left but have brought a retro spin to their most recent athleisure lines. We first saw this trend gradually appear last summer ’16 when the Adidas ‘Superstar’ shoe as well as the ‘Stan Smith’ sneaker were on the soles of feet by many and the sneaker sales began to skyrocket. The Adidas Original track jacket and track pants, along with the Harlem plants are being sported daily serving as a casual, everyday look and does well for travel purposes allowing one to travel comfortably while still traveling in style. Adidas even released a velvet track jacket, hoodie, and leggings which are all similar to what our parents would’ve rocked in the 80’s- if only they had kept their retro wardrobe.
FILA has come back into the game with various items ranging from bucket hats, to crop tops, to retro windbreakers- all of which incorporate their signature colors of red, white and blue and resemble fashion trends from the 90’s. Nike has even teamed up with Nordstrom as they collaborated to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Nike Air Max’s which had originally launched in 1987 and were first designed by Tinker Hatfield. To celebrate the anniversary, Nordstrom has a limited selection of Nike Airs that had hit the sales floor this past month.
Of course, these retro athleisure and streetwear styles wouldn’t prosper if it weren’t for the celebrity influence that has taken over the marketing on these popular brands and items. Pharrell Williams’ collaboration with Adidas served as being “more than collaboration; more than a footwear range. This is an unapologetic tribute to human endeavor itself.” Speaking of Adidas…let’s not forget that Kendall Jenner is the newest face of Adidas. Kendall was named Adidas’ newest brand ambassador, which she announced on Instagram via Boomerang.
Other celebrities and artists have taken the fashion industry by storm such as Justin Bieber whose Calvin Klein ad campaign photos have allowed him to serve as the newest Mark Wahlberg. That pretty mothafuckaaaaa aka Lord Pretty Flacko aka A$AP Rocky is back with his third collaborative collection with Guess for summer 2017 which is known as the “Ice Cream and Cotton Candy” collection. The items in the collection are made of up of many pastel colors and range from $39 – $148 USD. The collection serves the vintage look while including many exclusive pieces for women, rather than A$AP’s usual unisex pieces. The A$AP x Guess collaboration wouldn’t be complete, however, without the notorious 90’s supermodel Naomi Campbell serving looks, snuggled up against A$AP.
And finally, let’s not forget about Lil Boat. Lil Yatchy aka Lil Boat has not only taken the rap game by storm but he’s taking over the fashion industry as well. Having teamed up with Nautica and having been recently- appointed Natuica’s creative designer in February, Yatchy’s allowed for his bold, stand-out style to serve as a retro remix for Nautica. As a fearless, creative, talented and positive 19 year old, we can see the inspiration and energy flow in his fashion line and you can get a sneak peak of his Nautica summer favorites by clicking the link below.
