Atlanta-based rapper Gucci Mane and self-proclaimed King of Atlanta is the latest rapper to stake his claim as the inventor of the rap sub-genre trap music.
Last week the rapper posted a Flash Back Friday photo that looks like it was taken about the time of his debut album Trap House in 2005. “#FBF The Day I Invented Trap Music #Guwop aka #TheEvilGenius #1017Ceo,” he captioned the pic.
The inventor of trap music has been up for debate in the past. Last year, T.I. claimed he is the one who created the popular sub-genre on his sophomore album Trap Muzik in 2003. “We want to make sure that we give everybody the best T.I.P. album that we can give them,” the King told Angie Martinez during an interview about his upcoming project.” I’m going for trap music on this. Because a lot of people don’t really, really know that I created trap music.”
He continued, “There was no such thing as trap music prior to [T.I.]. No such thing. It didn’t exist. It was OutKast and crunk, like that’s what it was. Organized Noize and crunk.”
For most Trap music stans, the biggest frustration they have isn’t even about who started trap music, but how they managed to lose the name of their genre to EDM. Whether you agree that Gucci is the inventor of trap or not is less important because EDM is a greater evil at work.
